Obituary for Peter L Hannon

Peter (Pete) Lawrence Hannon, 79, of Walsenburg, Colorado passed away, December 15, 2022 at home in the care of Sangre de Cristo Hospice, Trinidad, CO.
Pete was born on January 19,1943 in Schenectady, NY to Lawrence Bernard Hannon and Audrey Beatrice Earls.
Pete was in the US Naval Reserves for six years with two years active duty. He enlisted while still in high school. He spent the majority of his time at sea on the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier. This was during the time of the Vietnam War. He has expressed numerous times how much he loved being in the Navy. He was able to see a lot of the world and experience many different cultures. He especially enjoyed the times he spent in Japan.
Although Pete was born in upstate NY, he had a love of the West. In 1995, he moved to Colorado after retiring from Verizon. He had a 25-year career that started with The Bell System in New York and ended with Verizon during which he worked as a lineman, frameman, and switch tech. His fun “after retirement” jobs were working at gun shows on the weekends and selling guns at Cabela’s and Big R in Colorado.
He was a man with many interests and talents. He was a marathon runner; a participant in the 1984 Olympic Torch Relay and in a separate Olympic inspired event, he ran in the Olympic Marathon that started at Staten Island, NY and ended in Central Park; collected and raced cars; participated in the Great Montana Centennial Cattle Drive of 1989; went on the Outlaw Trail Drive a number of years ago; attended many mountain men events; hunted; and, fished.

Pete was a lifetime New York Yankee fan as well as a lifetime Dallas Cowboy fan. When he was a child, his father taught him how to play golf and he continued to play as often as he could into his 70’s. He loved watching the tournaments of the professional golfers. Pete was an avid reader of books and magazines of all kinds and was a genius at doing crossword puzzles. He was truly a “word smith”.
He had volunteered at Praying Hands Ranch in Elizabeth, Colorado and Cowboys for Kids in Loveland, CO (both Equine Assisted Activities and Therapy Centers). He also volunteered for several years at the annual National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO
Pete is survived by his wife, Joan Hannon, Walsenburg, Colorado, one son, Daniel (Dan) Hannon, Poughkeepsie, NY, one brother, Tim Hannon and wife Esther Hannon, Denver, CO, one sister, Dale Daly and her husband Bev Daly, Manassas, VA as well as many nieces and nephews.
Pete is preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents.
When he lived, he lived big on this side of eternity and is now living even bigger on the other side!
