Oress DeHerrera, (husband of the late Mary Mae Britt) died peacefully on June 30,2022 at his home in Walsenburg, Colorado.
He is survived by his children James, a professor at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, daughter-in-law Laurie, daughter Dr. Mary Codo, son-in-law Edward Codo DDS, four grandchildren Patrick, Mark, Michael and Thomas of Naperville, Illinois, daughter Rebecca DeHerrera, a film and TV make-up artist, son-in-law Euphrates Arthur of Los Angeles, California, brothers Ernest and Archie, sisters Sophie and Josie, Cecil Martinez, along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Oress was born in Rouse, Colorado near Walsenburg on December 18, 1932, to Fidel and Lucia DeHerrera. He attended Huerfano County high school where he was an outstanding athlete in football and track and field and graduated from Trinidad Community College. Oress served in the US army during the Korean war. He continued his football career in the service as an All-Star football player and was the recipient of the good conduct and national defense metals. He served two terms as Huerfano County Commissioner and was recognized for his accomplishments with the resolution that October 29, 2017, was designated “Oress DeHerrera Day” by the Huerfano County Commissioners. He was also proud of his involvement in the Coal Mining Museum of Walsenburg.
Oress was active in the church and was a Fourth degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus.
Many will remember Oress for his musical talent and performances at the Veteran’s home here in Walsenburg and the surrounding area. His love of music was a source of great joy throughout his life, and he shared it with love.
St Mary’s Senior Outreach Program was an organization close to his heart. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, to St Mary’s Senior Outreach program, in care of Sister Carol Tlach, 324 E 7th Street, Walsenburg, Colorado, 81089.
Services will be held Thursday, July 7, 2022, 10:30 am at St. Mary’s Church, Walsenburg, Colorado. Due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, masks will be required at the service. Arrangements made by Boies-Ortega Funeral Home.
