Obituary for Michael David Whitehead
Michael David Whitehead, 63, a long-time Walsenburg resident, left us heartbroken in the early morning hours of August1. This world is a better place for him having lived in it.
Born on April 7, 1956, in Wilmington, Ohio, he was the devoted eldest son of wilmot David Whitehead and the late Clara JoAnn (Dettwiller) Whitehead of La Junta. He was joyfully married to Carol Lynne (Marks) Whitehead for 35 years. The marriage produced four beautiful children; David Arthur Whitehead (Shiloh) of Walsenburg, Ginger Michelle Whitehead of Aguilar, Charles William Whitehead of Walsenburg and Clara Jane Whitehead of Greeley.
Mike was also previously blessed with a daughter Carrie Jean (Scott) Snyder of Las Vegas, NV.
Mike's siblings are Charles Kenneth (Debbie) Whitehead of Fort Myers Beach, FL, Carol Ann (James) Lockhart of Las Animas and William Dale (Valerie) Whitehead of Greeley.
Mikes's grandchildren are Carrie and Scott's Children Tristan and Sebastian and David and shiloh's children Tyler and Emily.
Mike graduated high school in 1974 as the center and the heart and soul of the undefeated state champion Tilghman High School football team in Paducah, kentucky. He attended Southeast Missouri State University, then Yankton College in Yankton, South Dakota where he played football and baseball as well as serving as a coach, graduating in 1979. He received his Masters in Education Administration from the University of Northern Colorado. He married Carol in 1984 and they came to Walsenburg in 1988, where he served many years as a coach, teacher and principal.
Son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, coach, teacher, mentor and friend, Mike was a shining example to thousands upon whose lives he had a positive impact.
A quadraplegic from a 2002 accident, Mike amazed his doctors and outlived his prognosis by many years and continued his coaching and teaching. He was looking forward to learning to kayak and scuba dive when he unexpectedly passed.
The tragedy of his death is felt by more people than can be listed here.
