Joe was born in Del Carbon, CO to Isiais and Esther (Gonzales) Ortivez. He was the eldest of 7 children. He had 5 sisters:
Jean Ontiveros, Linda Salazar, Barbara De Herrea, Betty Espinoza (deceased), and Maria Salazar (deceased), and 1 brother
Joseph Ortivez (deceased).
He proudly served in the United States Navy for 20 years and retired at the rank of an E7/CPO. While serving his time in the Navy he met and married his wife Roseanne (Vallejos) of 57 years. Together they had 4 daughters: Donna Ortivez (Peyton, CO), Phyllis Lacy (Ellicott, CO), Katherine Ortivez (deceased), and Nancy Ortivez (Fountain, CO).
He enjoyed spending time with his 5 grandkids and 8 great grandkids. His hobbies consisted of going to the Calhan and Fowler auctions. He relished the farm life, hunting, fishing, talking about politics, and talking about his time spent in the military.
Church services will be held at Saint Mary Church in Walsenburg, CO, and he will be laid to rest at North Saint Mary Cemetery in Walsenburg, CO.
