Obituary for James Boies

In Memory of James Albert Boies and Lucille Helen Boies

Jim was born September 22, 1923 in Fort Morgan, Colorado. Died September 27, 2005 in Fruita Colorado.

Lucille was born October 11, 1931 in Quinter, Kansas. Died August 8, 2023 in Casper, WY.

Jim was the adopted and only son of Jim M. and Myrtle J. Boies. Growing up in Fort Morgan, CO. he took music lessons, was a Boy Scout, and ran track in high school. He graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1946.

Lucille was the first-born daughter of Henry and Amelia Walt. She grew up on a farm near Quinter KS. Being the oldest she was the default son of Henry and Amelia. She learned the traditional culinary arts plus how to do all the chores on a farm. Her family moved to Fort Morgan where Lucille graduated from Fort Morgan High in 1949.

Jim and Lucille met while Jim was working as a butcher at the Safeway store in Fort Morgan, Lucille was a senior in high School. They were married September 26, 1949. From Fort Morgan the two moved to Brush CO., Holyoke CO., and then to Denver where Jim worked at several different jobs, Jim was an insurance salesman and worked at several different mortuaries as a mortician. Lucille was a stay-at-home mother taking care of two sons. In 1954 they moved to Thornton CO. where they purchased their first house. By then there were four children, two sons and two daughters. While living in Thornton their youngest son was born. During this time Jim wanted to own his own mortuary. He was able to do this in 1959 when he moved his family to Walsenburg, CO.

Jim was a funeral director in Walsenburg for 36 years. A community that he and Lucille loved. Both were devout Catholics. Jim was ordained a Deacon in the Catholic Church in 1975. Lucille stayed at home and supported Jim as she was his right hand in running the business and raising the five children. As the years went by in business Jim started to struggle. As we age, life takes its toll. Jim, unfortunately, had to bury so many of his close friends. With the support of Lucille and their deep faith they held strong.

While in business in Walsenburg, Jim joined all the civic organizations. He enjoyed his time at Lions Club and Rotary Club. Jim held several positions in the city and county government, city council men and Walsenburg Coroner. When his sons became of age, he became a Boy Scout Leader. As a funeral director he felt it was his duty to serve each family with kindness, dignity and respect. Something he tried to instill in each of his children.

Jim retired in 1995. They moved to Fruita CO. This time it was Jim supporting Lucille to help care for her parents. Jim also started a second career; in 1996 Jim began ministering in several nursing homes in the Grand Valley. In late 1996 Jim started working as the VA Hospital Chaplain. The years Jim spent as chaplains were very rewarding for him. Jim found a new appreciation of life for our military personnel and everyone he met.

Lucille was the ultimate homemaker. While a senior in high school she was one of 28 girls selected in Colorado to represent her state at the national convention of Future Homemakers of America in Kansas City MO. Lucille also had scholarship to CSU Fort Collins in Home Economics, but she chose to get married and start a family. Through the years Lucille put her skills to good use. Lucille was a seamstress, chef, baker, and nurse to her family, secretary, volunteered at school functions and was Jim’s right hand with the family mortuary business. Lucille was able to blend different cultures of cooking and mastered them all. Lucille grew up during the depression and learned to stretch the family budget, as there was not much of a budget. She made everything from scratch, planted a large garden and canned all she could. Holiday dinners were amazing. One highlight of Lucille’s was to serve the Bishop of Pueblo diocese Easter dinner.

In the early 70’s Jim and Lucille were introduced to a place called Our Lady of Guadalupe in Pecos, NM. They went to a retreat there. While in Pecos they were introduced to a deeper spiritual understanding. In bible terms, they were born again. This was a major turning point in both of their lives.

Jim would go on to become a Deacon in the Catholic Church. Lucille learned to play the guitar and lead worship at prayer meetings they held in their home. Both Jim and Lucille would go on to minister to people in Walsenburg and Huerfano County. Jim would officiate at weddings and funerals. Lucille would host prayer meetings and take communion to shut-ins.

Lucille, a woman of faith, gave of herself not only to her family but to many others through her Eucharist Ministry in Walsenburg, bible studies in Walsenburg, Fruita, and Casper as both teacher and student.

Lucille had a great sense of humor. She was an avid card player. She never missed an opportunity to challenge her kids or grandkids to a “hot” game of Cribbage, Pinochle, Rummy, Uno, and her latest Hand and Foot. She loved to beat the socks off us but was just as delighted to see us win.

Lucille gave the gift of life to her children. She always said we were just lent to her to raise in the best way she could. She allowed us to make our most miserable mistakes but was always there to pick up the pieces. Lucille was a wonderful mother, she deeply loved all her children, and she was always there, throughout their lives.

Throughout our lives, Jim and Lucille always let us know just how much we are loved. They are missed by all of us.
