Obituary for Donald C. Garcia

Donald C. Garcia
Donald C. Garcia went to his final rest on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 in Pueblo, Colorado. Donald was born to Genoveva Garcia Mestas on 2/24/////////1933 in Pass Creek, Colorado. He was educated in the Walsenburg public school system. As a young man, he married Maria Bernice Vigil on May 24, 1952. Don and Bernice, along with their large, lively family were happy to celebrate their 65th anniversary this year.

Donald was preceded in death by his mother, GG, his stepfather Porfirio, his sister, Elizabeth Pineda; and grandson, Christopher Eric Garcia. He is survived by his loving wife, Bernice, his nine children; Dennis (Janie Sandoval); Steve (Debra Patch); AnnaLee Stults (Carl); David (Colette Swartzendruber); Rose Cisneros (Richard); Jimmy Ray; Richard (Rochelle Apodaca); Laura Day (Steve); and Chris (Loretta Denbow). He was the proud grandfather to 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He is also survived by his brother Telosforo Rodriguez, his half-brother Benny Mestas, and many nieces, nephews, and other members of his large, extended family; many of whom still live in Colorado. His family was the joy of his life, and he truly enjoyed visits with all of them.

Donald worked for many years for the Walsenburg Police Department, followed by several years working for Huerfano County Road & Bridge. Don was a natural storyteller and jokester and truly enjoyed his time with his coworkers and working in the County and in the community. Don was the first president of the local Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE 1187), was a Walsenburg City Councilman, and was on the La Plaza de Los Leones planning committee for many years. Donald was an avid Colorado Rockies and Denver Bronco fan. Don was friendly and likeable, and enjoyed his time with everyone who crossed his path. He and Bernice had an open door at all times and welcomed all visitors, whether they were friends or relatives.

In his later years, Don enjoyed going to coffee every day with his group of buddies, and could often be found at the softball field with Bernice, or watching his children and grandchildren play in school sports.

The family will host a memorial reception on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 12:00 pm at the Eagles Hall, 614 Main Street in Walsenburg.
