Obituary

Betty Joan Story, daughter of Joseph and Katherine Williams, was born in Walsenburg, CO and was blessed to be raised in Huerfano County along with her brother Bill Williams. Beautiful Colorado is where she met her lifelong partner and loving husband of 68 years, Verner Story. Together, Betty and Vern raised sons William and Joseph Story in Stockton, CA. Betty is also survived by daughter-in-law Marilynn Story, and grandchildren Kyle and Regina Story. Her family and friends will miss her dearly.

Betty enjoyed a variety of activities while in the company of family and friends. She was fond of traveling to jazz festivals, national parks, historic sites, and just down the road to play silly card games with fun-loving, old friends. For years, she was a performer and a board member of La Veta’s Fort Francisco Theater. She also served on La Veta’s Library Board. Coincidentally, her favorite pastime was reading, reading and more reading. When she was not reading literature, she enjoyed reading music scores while playing the piano.

Betty was proud to be a graduate of Cottey College and University of Northern Colorado. She spent much of her time contributing to the communities around her, such as serving on the Cuchara Chapel Board, assisting with the establishment of La Veta’s Book Nook, and serving on the Trinidad State Junior College President’s Advisory Board. For over 60 years, Betty was a member of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) and it was her great honor to be a middle school teacher, a high school teacher, and a mentor to new teachers. Mrs. Story would like to take this final opportunity to thank each of her former students for doing their best while being one of her pupils. She sincerely hopes each of you are striving to live up to your full potential. To all, Betty believes it was her privilege to have known you and to share this life with you.

At this time, there is no celebration of life announcement. To honor Betty’s memory, please continuously make positive contributions to our communities. God bless us all!
